A SENSE OF SHIP

Translucent colorful sculptures. Dynamically shaped. This is characteristic of how I see the world. Colorful and light. With these contemporary maritime shapes, known for anyone because these ships travel the globe. Inspired by these well known forms and shapes I create my own distinguished narrative. A chronicle about departure, hope, loss. The ship as a metaphor for vigour, desire and life.

DELTA WORKS

I’m also fascinated by the huge size of the Dutch Delta Works and the Zeeland Bridge. Man is small and builds big things in an attempt to stop nature for a while. That gives me a romantic feeling.
— Sasja

UNBOUNDED (DIPTYCH) | 140 X 340 CM | ACRYLICPAINT SAND EMULSION ON CANVAS | SASJA HAGENS 2014 |

The painting UNBOUNDED is about the big flood in 1953. The ‘Watersnoodramp’. Dutch engineers had the wonderful idea to take the caissons from the Normandian coast , used as Mulberry harbors by the Allied during WW II - to Holland. They placed these concrete caissons and fixed the hole in the dyke.

HARBOURSCAPES 2021

People sometimes ask me why I’ve spent so much time painting ports – such an obvious theme. But their size and industrial quality light the fire in me.

CLOUD CUCKOO LAND
SNOEK // HAGENS

Saar Snoek (1974) and Sasja Hagens (1973) paint together. One starts, the other intervenes. This series is a series of archetypal and iconic landscapes in which they paint the best of nature, but better.

KALYPSO-SERIES

To me, it’s all about color. About rhythm. About seeing what it is, yet letting the abstract value of the painting dominate. It’s not about the picture, it’s about the dynamics of applying the paint. That generates meaning.
— Sasja Hagens
Kalypso; a fierce anthology of industrial and landscape elements. In my paintings I’m giving my vision of our future landscape. How will our environment develop through influences of science and new technologies?
